Obit of Thelma Higgins

SULLIVAN — Thelma C. Higgins, 94, of Sullivan, passed away at 2:50 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at Sullivan County Community Hospital. She was born in Veedersburg, on Nov. 4, 1915, the daughter of Thomas J. Chatt and Mabel Blanche Ramsey Chatt.

Thelma was a member of the First Christian Church in Sullivan, and a member of the Eastern Star in Sullivan and Hillsboro. Her and her husband Donald owned and operated Higgins 5 & 10 Variety Stores in Veedersburg, and Chatsworth, Ill., for over 30 years. After retirement, she also volunteered at Sullivan County Community Hospital and the Sullivan Library.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald R. Higgins, in 1996; three brothers, Lawrence Chatt, John Chatt and Ronald Chatt; two sisters, Mary Harmless and Sarah Johns; and two nephews, Michael Johns and Gary Harmless.

Survivors include one daughter, Donna Glascock (Louis) of Sullivan; two brothers, Roderick Chatt of Granada Hills, Calif., and James Chatt of Oakwood, Ill.; one sister, Lyle Chatt of Hillsboro; two grandchildren, Katrina Dugan (Charles) and Travis Glascock; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010, at Center Ridge Cemetery, with the Rev. Dale Wise officiating. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesday. Interment is in Center Ridge Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Banks and Brust Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sullivan First Christian Church Choir Scholarship, or the Sullivan Eastern Star.
