Obit of Ronald "Kurt" Shafer


Ronald “Kurt” Shafer 73, of Chatsworth passed away at 7:45 am on Friday, September 5, 2014 at his residence in Chatsworth. A chorus of Angels sang perfect harmony as God personally welcomed Kurt into heaven. God will sit for eternity in the center with Kurt on one side and Jesus on the other and together they will watch every Detroit Tiger’s game ever to come.
A visitation and memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at Calvert & Martin Funeral Home in Chatsworth. According to his wishes, cremation rites will take place. Memorial contributions may be made for a fund for his children.
He was born November 15, 1940 in Detroit, MI a son of Ronald and Ruth (Thompson) Shafer. He previously married Babita Lachhman. She survives in New Lennox, IL. Also surviving are his two children: Kimra Shafer of Bloomington, IL and Brandon Shafer of New Lennox, IL; five siblings: Tod (Donna) Shafer of Romeoville, IL, Karen Kanin of Schaumburg, IL, Jill (Frank) Hughes of Dexter, MI, Greg Shafer of Chatsworth, IL and Scott (Statta) Shafer of Chatsworth, IL; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Kurt served his country in the United States Army. He worked for the government and Peace Corps all his life. Kurt wrote a book about his vast travels. He had been to 200 countries of the World, 321 of the Travelers Century Club, and the United Nations 193 Member States.
