Obit of Dayo E. Thompson

MELVIN – Dayo E. Thompson, 87, of Melvin died at 3:30 p.m. Friday (Nov. 27, 2015) at the Piper City Rehab and Living Center. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the Melvin United Methodist Church in Melvin with the Rev. Paula Wallace officiating. Burial will be in Melvin Cemetery with military rites by the Melvin Sibley American Legion. Visitation will be for one hour before the service at the church. A Masonic service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Mr. Thompson was born on Jan. 25, 1928, in Robinson, a son of Guy and Emma Ackert Thompson. He married Joy Dickman on Nov. 6, 1949, in Chatsworth. She died on Feb. 6, 2009. Surviving are four sons, Mark (Christine) Thompson of Watseka, Eric (Jane) Thompson of Melvin, Kevin (Susan) Thompson of Port Byron and Shawn (Amy) Thompson of Parrish, Fla.; a daughter, Lisa (Kevin) Krall of Dewey; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a son, Craig, and a great-grandson. Mr. Thompson was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He worked at WCIA and also did business consulting, marketing, and clock and watch repair. Dayo was a member of the Melvin United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent for many years, alongside his wife. He was a member of the Melvin and Gibson Masonic Lodges and was a past master, district deputy grand master, and participated in the American Passion Play in Bloomington for 15 years. He was also involved in scouting for many years and was a past mayor of Melvin. Lamb Funeral Home in Gibson City is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Melvin UMC Sunday School.
