Wreck Lantern returned to Chatsworth.

The Chatsworth Train Wreck occurred just east of Chatsworth in 1887. Approximately 85 people were killed and 372 injured. It still ranks as the 7th worst American train wreck in terms of the number of fatalities. In 1939, a citizen in Chatsworth loaned a lantern from the train wreck to the Livingston County Historical Society. Back in 1939, the Society had one of the few museums in the county. In recent years, this lantern has been on display in the old County Courthouse in Pontiac. With the recent completion of the Bluebird Hall in Chatsworth, Richard Runyon, Mayor of Chatsworth requested the Society return the old lantern so it could be displayed in Bluebird Hall. On July 25th, Dale C. Maley, President of the Livingston County Historical Society, returned the 132 year-old lantern to Mayor Richard Runyon, as shown in the attached photo, after it was on loan to the society for 80 years

Obit of Lyman "Max" Moore

Lyman “Max” Moore, 80, of Chatsworth passed away at 6:45 am Sunday, July 21, 2019 at Piper City Rehab and Living Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, July 25, 2019 at the United Methodist Church, Chatsworth with the Rev. Lynette Barnett officiating. Burial will be in the West Lawn Cemetery, Cullom. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 pm Wednesday at the United Methodist Church. The family suggests memorials be directed to the United Methodist Church or OSF Hospice. Max was born November 20, 1938 in Marion, Indiana the son of Lyman and Ruth Stroup Moore. He married Linda Allen of Cullom, (mother of his children) on August 30,1959. She passed away May 7, 1991. He was remarried to Vicky Sorey on December 2, 1995. She survives. He is survived by a daughter Leanne Moore Tampa, Fl, a son Steve (Tammy) Moore Chatsworth, a stepson Gene (Robin) Sorey, Rice Lake WI, a brother Jack (Shirley) Moore Mattoon, IL, six grandchildren Dani (Danielle) Moore Australia, Shawn (Shana) Moore Chenoa, Brad Moore Chatsworth, Linda (Frank) Turner Chenoa, Jesse Moore Waverly, TN and Sam Moore Chatsworth, two step-grandchildren Gavin Sorey San Diego, CA and Garin (Katie) Sorey Rice Lake, WI and five great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Phyllis (Skip) Karcher. Max graduated from Forrest Strawn Wing High School in 1956. Max proudly served in the Illinois Army National Guard from 1956-1961. Max was a building contractor for many years, building farm buildings and several homes. He also owned a garage during many of those years. He worked nearly 10 years at Chanute AFB as a civilian employee painting the museum Air Force planes. He owned the Moore Hardware store in Chatsworth from 1995-2010. He previously worked at Honeggers’ in Fairbury, Diller Tile clay tile factory in Chatsworth and also drove a truck for several years. Max was an active member of the United Methodist Church, serving a lay speaker as well as ushering and singing. He helped build the new church building. He participated in several Emmaus walks and their prison ministry. Max was the 2009 recipient of the Noble Pearson Award. He was a member of the American Legion and previous member of the Lions Club and the Chatsworth library board. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who never met a stranger. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards, watching the Bulls and the Bears and listening to and singing gospel music.

Obit of Linda "Shoe" (Shoemaker) Martin

Linda L. “Shoe” Martin, 72, of Forrest, IL passed away at 12:41 pm on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL. Private family graveside services will be held at Forrest Township Cemetery. According to her wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. Calvert & Martin Funeral Home in Forrest is handling arrangements for the family. Linda was born October 21, 1946 in Mattoon, IL, a daughter of Lois and Ruth Cleone (Myers) Shoemaker. She married Charles Martin on April 23, 1977 in Chatsworth, IL. He survives. Also surviving are their two sons: Michael (Mandy) Martin of Lexington, IL and Mark (Amanda) Martin of Farmer City, IL; six grandchildren; and one brother: Charlie (Kay) Shoemaker of Chatsworth, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother: Jim Shoemaker. Linda was educated in the Chatsworth schools graduating from High School as a Bluebird. She worked for Pittsburg Tube (PTC Alliance) in Fairbury for 20 years. She was a school bus driver for Prairie Central and Tri Point schools for 15 years before retiring. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Her favorite past time was cheering on her Cubs with her beloved husband. Linda was a loving wife, mom, grandma, sister, aunt, and friend who will be greatly missed.

Jeanetta J. Durham Galloway, 64, of Chatsworth, Illinois, passed away at 6:06 a.m. on Monday July 8th, 2019 at her home in Chatsworth. A visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday July 12th, 2019 at Calvert & Martin Funeral Home in Chatsworth, Illinois. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. following visitation. According to the family’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chatsworth fire and EMS. Jeanetta was born July 19th, 1954 in Fairbury, Illinois, a daughter of Johnny and Betty (Barnes) Durham. She married Ronald Galloway on December 3rd, 1977 in Chatsworth, Illinois. He survives in Chatsworth, Illinois. She is also survived by her children: Shawna (Rich) Carver of Minonk, IL, Ronnie (Mary) Galloway of Chatsworth, IL and Brandon (Nikki) Galloway of Pontiac, IL ; her eight grandchildren; her one greatgrandchild on-the-way; her three siblings: Debbie Durham of Carbondale, IL, Georgia Durham and Duane Durham both of Chatsworth, IL; and her mother-in-law: Annetta Galloway of Chatsworth, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister: Denise Durham; one step mother: Shirley Durham; and one father-in-law: Berdell Galloway. Jeanetta was educated in the Chatsworth schools. Her and Jenise owned and operated J&J Café for nearly six years before retiring. She served on the Heritage Days committee for a number of years. She loved life. Her favorite holiday was Christmas and she loved to give an excessive amount of gifts to her family. Jeanetta spoiled her family any chance she could. They were her life. She enjoyed camping, golf cart rides and attending events with them. A memorable event in her life was her first tattoo, which she received at age 64 with family. Jeanetta was a loving wife, mom, grandma, great grandma, sister, aunt, and friend who will be greatly missed.

Richard E. “Dick” Kafer, 78, Fairbury, died at 9:34 pm Saturday, July 20, 2019 at OSF St. James-John Albrecht Medical Center, Pontiac. Visitation will be 3:30 to 6:15 pm Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church, Fairbury followed by a memorial service at 6:30 pm. Inurnment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Fairbury at a later date. Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury is assisting with arrangements. Dick was born February 3, 1941 in Weston, IL the son of Ben and Elsie Neth Kafer. He married Jeanne Smith on April 8, 1960 in Fairbury. She survives. Other survivors include his children, John Kafer, Dwight, Leanne (Tim) Kopischke, Savoy, Josh (Dana) Kafer, Fairbury, three grandchildren, Kristin (Caleb) Dietrich, Taylor and Gavin Kafer, one great granddaughter, Raegan Dietrich, two sisters, Eleanor (Jim) Mott, Carol (Jerry) McGivern, both of Bloomington, one brother, Kenneth (Gail) Kafer, Fairbury. He is preceded in death by a son, Tom, two brothers and two sisters. Dick was a 1959 graduate of Fairbury-Cropsey High School and received his teacher’s degree from Illinois State Normal University. Obit of Richard Wilson Sargarent, Sr.

Richard Wilson Sargarent, Sr., of Woodbridge, VA departed this life Friday, April 20, 2018, after a lengthy illness. He was 82 years old. He was born on December 8, 1935, in Cabery, IL to the late Wayne and Edna (Wilson) Sargeant. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1959 and retired as Lt. Commander. He worked as a Systems Engineer for several government contractors until his retirement in 2002. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nancy Shaheen Sargeant; his daughter, Nanette Sargeant of Chantilly, VA; his son, Richard Sargeant, Jr. (Michael) of Washington, DC; his granddaughters, Elizabeth and Christine Bruening of Chantilly, VA; his sister, Kay Brown of University Park, IL and his brother, Roger Sargeant of Naperville, IL. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5 at Sydenstricker United Methodist Church, 8508 Hooes Road, Springfield, VA 22153. A private interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Obit of Roger Wayne Sargeant

Roger Wayne Sargeant of Naperville, IL, departed this life Sunday, February 10 after a lengthy illness. He was 81 years old. He was born on January 18, in Cabery, IL to the late Wayne and Edna (Wilson) Sargeant. He grew up in Chatsworth IL and graduated Northern Illinois University in 1961 with a degree in education. He later went on to earn a master's degree in education. It was at Northern Illinois University he met his wife Lillian and they were married in 1961. He spent his entire career teaching, which was his passion and retired from Naperville Central High School in 2002 after over 30 years there. Roger is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lillian Barton Sargeant, his daughter Susan Buczkowski of Oak Park, IL, his son Thomas Sargeant, of Westchester, IL, daughter-in-law Jodee Sargeant, and his grandsons Franklin and Leo Buczkowski of Oak Park, IL, as well as his sister Kay Brown of South Bend, IN and his sister-in-law Nancy Sargeant of Woodbridge, VA. He was preceded in death by Richard (Red) Sargeant, his brother who passed away April 18, 2018. He is also survived by nephews and nieces and many friends. He was a wonderful husband, father, friend and grandfather. He loved all sports (played racquetball daily), traveling, his family, his dogs and jokes (good and bad). He will be remembered for his incredibly optimistic attitude, good nature and kind heartedness.Roger lived the last five months of his life at Belmont Village in Oak Park. ELGIN — John T. Weller, 71, of Elgin, passed away at 4:45 p.m. Saturday (June 8, 2019) in his home. Cremation rites will be accorded, and private family internment will take place at a later date in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Chatsworth. Memorial contributions in John's name may be made to a charity of the donor's choice or to Fox Valley Food for Health, an organization in Geneva, providing meals to cancer patients and their families. John was born April 9, 1948, in Chatsworth, a son of Joseph Anton CHS 1930 and Mary Helen Kratz Weller. He married Judith Brady Weller on March 8, 1969. They were divorced in 1998. He lived in Dwight from 1969 to 2017, at which time he moved to Elgin, to be close to family during his illness. Surviving are one sister, Cathy (Bruce) Williams, Issaquah, Wash.; three brothers, Richard (Armella) Weller, Fort Myers, Fla.; Paul (Phyliss) Weller, Rougemont, N.C.; and Philip (Debra) Weller, Dwight; and ex-wife and good friend, Judith Weller, Elgin. Also surviving are John's three daughters, Mary (Arjen) Boin-Weller, Leiden, Netherlands; Ann Weller, St. Charles; and Maureen Weller, Leiden, Netherlands; and five grandchildren, Charlotte Boin, Utrecht, Netherlands; Desanne Boin, Leiden, Netherlands; Beau Savoia, St. Charles; and Weller and Linden Donnelley, Leiden, Netherlands. John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Steve Welle; cousins, Terry Weller and Ida (Beaver) Zaverzence; and good friend, Bill Lutson. John started a career with R.R. Donnelley and Sons in 1968, where he started as pressman and retired in 2006 as supervisor. He loved his job and a number of his colleagues were very dear to him. John was an avid Harley Davidson fan, and drove a Harley in 48 of the 50 states with his biking friends, Bruce, Maynard, Larry and Shirley, Eugene, Ron and brother Paul. John saw a lot of the world. Some of his travels included a trip to Hawaii with his cousin Gerry Weller, Australia with his daughter Ann, Iceland with daughters Maureen and Mary, and various trips to Holland, Spain, France, Belgium and Germany with family and friends. “Johnny Blue Eyes” was known for his sharp wit, love of puns and acute sense of humor, which he used to the very end of his life to comfort those who visited and cared for him. He was also a lover of animals, and was happiest sitting around a campfire with family and friends on a starry, starry night.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00am, Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Chatsworth with Pastor Mauricio Vieira officiating. Burial will take place in Chatsworth Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00-8:00pm, Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chatsworth. A second visitation will be held from 10:00-10:45am, Wednesday, prior to the funeral. Neil was born May 22, 1934 at the family farm in Germanville Twp., IL, a son of Augustus and Mae Smith Hornickel. He married Patricia Ferguson on September 19, 1954 in Pontiac. She survives in Fairbury. Other survivors include his five children, Cindy (Keith) Henrichs of Dix, Vicki (Darrell) Haag of Kankakee, Lori Shafer of Chatsworth, Rich (Colleen) Hornickel of Fairbury, and Tami (Don) Pitzer of Danville; fifteen grandchildren, Melinda (Ethan) Hayward, Janelle (Josh) Martin, Garrett (Jessica) Henrichs, Ryan (Shannon) Haag, Renee (Justin) Sadowski, Aaron (Christina) Haag, Zach (Jess) Shafer, Gabe Shafer, Alyx (Spencer Hurley) Shafer, Rendi (Cory) Cottrell, Josh Netherton, Jordan Hornickel, Justin Hornickel, Hannah Pitzer and Noah Pitzer; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Maxine Zorn of Fairbury; and one brother, Dale Hornickel of River Grove.

Marilyn was born July 17, 1926 in Livingston County, IL, a daughter of Claude and Mayme (Berlette) Wilson. She married Glen Dehm on August 21, 1943 at the Chatsworth United Methodist Church. He died on May 20, 2012. She is survived by two sons: Cary “Snook” (Jane) Dehm of Chatsworth and Scott (Tammy) Dehm of Chenoa; one daughter, Gayle (Dennis “Sport”) Hornickel of Chatsworth; one brother: Claude (Barb) Wilson, Jr. of Dwight; two sisters: Lois Wallrich of Chatsworth and Mary Lou West of Knoxville; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one infant daughter: Glenda Carol Dehm; one son: Jimmy Dehm; one daughter: Glenna Rae Dehm McGreal; one grandson: Eric Todd Dehm; three sisters: Donna Hornstein, Lila Dohman, and Frances Friedman; and five brothers: Clarence "Elwood", Vern, Jack, Dwain, and infant Claude Wayne Wilson. Marilyn was educated in the Chatsworth schools. She and her husband, Glen, farmed in the Chatsworth area. They wintered in Naples, FL. She was a member of the Chatsworth Unted Methodist Church and the Charlotte Home Extension. She enjoyed crafting/sewing, gardening, bowling, helping on the farm, puzzles, reading books, and the Thresherman's Reunion. Most of all, she loved her family and hosting family gatherings. Marilyn was a loving mom, grandma, great grandma, sister, aunt, and friend who will be greatly missed.

Obit of June (Koerner) Day

June Day, beloved wife of Donald Day, passed away at the age of 90 on Mary 17, 2019, leaving a marriage of 68 years, two children, Christina (Day) Weinstein of Marietta, GA & Douglas Day, of Minneapolis, MN; two grandchildren. Dr. Cynthai Zettler-Greeley and Caren (Zettler) Warren; three great grandchildren and a sister, Kathleen Albrecht of Scottsdale, AZ. June was born Feb. 23, 1929 in Chatsworth, IL., the first of two daughters to Philip and Elva Koerner. June was drawn into the world of music as a small child, tap dancing and singing, performing for various clubs, county fairs and organizations in Central Illinois, until she entered high school, when she began playing the clarinet and piano in the band and orchestra. Upon graduation, she was employed by Miller Music Co. in Bloomington, IL. where she met and fell in love with a traveling dance band musician. After a 6 month courtship, they wee married in July 1950 and made their home in Bloomington-Normal, IL., where their two children were born. Her loves next to her family and friends, and good music, were the Chicago Cubs and the city of Chicago, so it was no coincidence that the honeymoon began in Chicago. with the demise of the "Big Band" era, a career change was in order for husband Don. June began her training as a medical transcriptionist in a local hospital, and Don started his second career in Engineering as a draftsman for Caterpillar Tractor Co. and later York Div. of Borg Warner in Decatur, IL. as Chief Draftsman. A company change dictated a move to Avco Aerospace in Nashville, TN as an engineer, attending the University of Tennessee Extension. Three years in Nashville and more company revisions dictated another change, this time to Minneapolis, MN, evolving to a Manager of Crystal Tips Ice Machine Co. Party of McQuay, Inc. and Don enrolling in the Univ. of MN. Life was good but business was uncertain, so Don accepted a job with the industry leading Manitowac Ice Machine Co., as chief engineer and a move to Manitwoc, WI. In a 3 year stay June learned tennis but the lure of the city urged a move to St. Louis, MO. and a position with Hussman Inc. Div. of IC Industries, managing the Star Cooler Division. A subsequent advancement to General Manager of the Hussman Alton-Applied Air Division in Dallas, Texas required another move and as Don spearheaded the development of a line of ice machines, name Hussman Ice-King. The Days eventauly moved to Georgia where Don accepted a job as Director of Engineering for Hoshizaki America in Peachtree City. Don retired at the age of 65 and June likewise at 63 to their new home in Marietta, GA. The days joined the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in downtown Atlanta, and were active in the Food Ministry for several years. They later joined Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Sandy Springs, GA. The Days enjoyed many years of happy retirement, traveling throughout all 50 states, 5 continents, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with a family cruise of the Tahiti Islands. They attend many musical and theater performances as well as sight-seeing during their varied travel. A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 24, 2019 at 3 PM at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church. Cremation of the remains will be by Floral Hills, Tucker, GA and will be sprinkled in the Gulf of Mexico by the Children

Black on February 18, 1978, he preceded her in death on May 2, 1996. Surviving are five brothers: Donald (Shirley) Runyon of Chatsworth, Larry Runyon of Chatsworth, Erney (Diane) Runyon of Heyworth, Randy (Terri) Runyon of Cabot, AR, Richard (Donna) Runyon of Chatsworth; two sisters: June Arnold of Paxton, Mary Hanshew of Chatsworth; two step children: Philip (Vicki) Black Jr of Jacksonville, IL, Cassandra (Dennis) Krippel of Pontiac; five step grandchildren, one step great grandchild. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Husband Philip, one brother Tom Runyon and one sister Sandy Garrett.

Obit of Martin E. Stein

CHATSWORTH — Martin E. Stein, 78, of Chatsworth passed away Sunday (May 5, 2019) in Fort Myers, Fla. He was born Sept. 20, 1940, in Blue Island, to George and Ellen (Koerber) Stein. He married Patricia Colatriano in Chicago on June 23, 1971. He was a Vietnam veteran serving with the U.S. SeaBees stationed in Cam Rahn Bay, V.N. from 1966 to 1968. He worked as a millwright for International Harvester in Chicago for 26 years. He retired in 1997 from Baltimore Air Coil, Paxton, where he was employed as a welder. He loved training hunting dogs, shooting sports and hunting with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Pat; son, James Stein (Robin) of Fairbury; daughter, Shawn Stein Maxson of Bloomington; brother, William Stein of Emington; and five grandchildren, Cameron Maxson, Austin Maxson, Haley Jo Haberkorn, Keegan Stein and Alyssa Stein. He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings. Cremation arrangements by Hodges-Kiser Funeral Home, Fort Myers, Fla. Services will be held in Chatsworth at a later date. Michael Joseph Brauman, aged 52, of Forrest died Monday, April 29th, 2019. Cremation rites have been accorded. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at 10:00 am at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Chatsworth, with Rev. David Sabel officiating. A celebration of life luncheon will be held following the service. Visitation will be held on Friday May 3rd, 4:00 pm-7:00 pm at Sts. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church, with a Rosary Service at 3:30 pm. He was born December 7th, 1966, in Fairbury, the son of Gary and Peg (Froelich) Brauman. . He married Misty Perkins on August 12, 1995. Mike is survived by his daughter, Jaylyn Brauman (Michael Meredith) of Chatsworth and his son, Jaxon Brauman (Alex Bettenhausen) of Champaign, his mother, Peg Brauman of Forrest; two brothers, Eric (Karri) Brauman of Linn Creek, MO, and Matt (Laura) Brauman of Fairbury; seven nephews, Seth, Jared, Zachary, Matthew, Alex, Kyle, and Ryan; aunts and uncles, Lynne and Ray Grigsby of Downers Grove and Gene and Carol Froelich of Piper City; many loving cousins, family members, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Gary Brauman, grandparents Ernie and Susie Brauman and Edward and Dolores Froelich, uncle Richard Froelich, and one cousin, Brian Grigsby. Mike graduated from FSW high school in 1985 and attended Parkland College in Champaign. He was an over-the-road truck driver for Dibble Trucking. He was also a volunteer firefighter and first responder for the Chatsworth Fire Protection District from 1996-2002. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and NASCAR. His favorite pastime was spending time with his children at the cabin on the Vermilion River. Many weekends were spent around the campfire, fishing, and just hanging out.

Chatsworth Getting Ready for Bluebird Festival Posted on April 29, 2019

In Chatsworth, they’re getting ready for this Saturday’s (5/4/19) Bluebird Festival, and Mayor Richard Runyon says there’s going to be plenty to see and do. Saturday’s event runs from 11 until 3, and Runyon says it’s a celebration of the connection between the community and a some of the area’s more colorful wildlife. “Chatsworth High School was the Bluebirds,” Runyon explains, “and about three years ago we started the bluebird project….we have about 185 nest boxes right in the Chatsworth area for the bluebirds and they’re very successful.” Runyon says that Chatsworth was officially declared the bluebird capital of Illinois in 2017, and that the bluebird project extends to Saunemin, Cullom, Strawn, and Forrest. All of those communities have come together to create about 300 habitats for bluebirds. Runyon adds that the birds apparently approve, as many of the boxes are already occupied with bluebirds. The festival on Saturday, May 4th, will take place in Chatsworth’s downtown area and will include music, presentations, and games and events for kids. Estel Gregory, 90, of Decatur died April 25 at Fair Haven ChrisƟan Home. Estel “Greg” was born on January 21, 1929 in Piper City, IL the son of Phillip and Myrtle Gregory. He married Ester Sancken, October 23, 1949. He worked for Sears Roebuck and Company for 40 years before retiring in 1988. He worked part time at the Sears store at Hickory Point mall for several years and also was a volunteer at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Surviving are sons Dennis (Kimberly) of Morris, IL, James (Paƫ) of Bloomington and Kevin of Decatur. Six grandchildren Shelly Rencken of PonƟac, IL, Matt Gregory of Alabaster, AL, Troy Gregory of Champaign, Scott Gregory of Bloomington, Rick Doering of Decatur, and Phillip Gregory of Nashville Tennessee. Great grandchildren twins Zoe and Marley Daering, and Charlie Daering. Step children Dayton, Brandon and Carly Bohn, Olivia Renken, Ayla, Stella and Nora Gregory. He was preceded in death by a daughter Debbie Doering, his parents and a sister. Mildred N. McLoughlin, 98, of Forrest, IL passed away at 9:45 am on Sunday, April 14, 2019 at her home. Mildred was born September 6, 1920 in Sibley, IL a daughter of John and Anna Combs. She married G. Eugene Cline in Chatsworth, IL on October of 1938. He passed away in 1969. She then married Paul McLoughlin in Chatsworth, IL on October of 1970. He passed in 1994. She is survived by her daughter: Judith Skurka of Bloomington, IL; her two grandsons: Cory (Christine) Cline of Forrest, IL and Anthony Cline of Sandwich, IL; and four great grandsons: Christopher, Antonio, Sean, and Alex Cline. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one son: John “Jack” Cline; one brother: Laverne Combs; one sister: Gladys Harris; and one son-in-law: Joseph Skurka Jr. Mildred was a telephone operator for a number of years in Sibley and then Chatsworth. She then went on to be a teller and bookkeeper at the Citizens Bank of Chatsworth for many years retiring from there. She enjoyed traveling, matching things, and her special dogs. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, just being with them and doing anything is what she lived for. Mildred was a loving mom, grandma, great grandma, and friend who will be greatly missed by her family.

CHATSWORTH – The Livingston County Soil and Water Conservation District is educating women landowners on conservation efforts through a series of meetings held around the county. The most recent event in Chatsworth, which included a rainfall simulator, focused on soil health and why it is important. “This is actually something that started, for us here in Livingston County, working with American Farmland Trust,” explained resource conservationist Becky Taylor. “It is an initiative they are very much behind.” Three more half-day sessions are planned at various locations around the county with a full-day session planned in conjunction with a summer farm tour in July. Taylor often receives strong participation and good feedback from the events. “We try and get a lot of information out but not overwhelm them.” LCSWCD continues its effort of promoting soil conservation and improving water quality. Illinois currently has the Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy where nitrates must be reduced to a certain level by 2025. “We are trying to do everything we can to promote that and improve that for people,” Taylor noted. RONALD LUCEK

Ronald was born August 7, 1952 in Fairbury, IL to Dorothy (Jordan) and Rudolph Lucek. He was raised in Chatsworth, IL and attended grade school through the 9th grade. After 9th grade Ron went to work as a brick layer and also did some farming. Ron entered into the U.S. Navy in 1971 and was station throughout various places, but often shared stories with his family of his experiences on the ships and being at Midway Island. He served until his honorable discharge in March of 1975. After his discharge from the Navy Ron moved to Baudette and started working as a fishing guide at various resorts on Lake of the Woods. It was at this time in his life that he met the love of his life Dorothy Baade. In 1976 Ron and Dorothy welcomed their first child Amanda Jean. Ron and Dorothy were united in marriage on February 17, 1978. They welcomed their second child Justin Wayne in 1979, and third child Narra-Lyn Lee in 1982. Ron continued to guide on Lake of the Woods until 1989 when he decided it was time for a change. He then turned to various types of construction including sheetrock, and cabinetry work with life-long friend Bart. Ron had a passion for barbequing so strong that there was a grill fired up at someones house every Sunday all summer long and if he wasn't the cook was sure to keep an eye whoever decided to cook, he also enjoyed deer hunting season, and despite the complaining we all know he enjoyed fishing with his Iowa boys. He had one of the greatest collections of M & M's, but most of all, his greatest hobby was spoiling the ones who called him PAPA. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Dorothy Lucek of Baudette, MN; his special dog Buddy; Children, Amanda (Ronnie) Spaur and Justin (Samantha) Lucek both of Baudette; Grandchildren, Eric Anthony Spaur, Derek, BayLeigh, Danika, Elyn, & Karys Lucek, Cassidy Lucek and Amber Adams whom were Narra-Lyn's daughters that Ron and Dorothy raised since 2003; Sister Connie (Greg) Olson; Brothers Rory Lucek and Randy (Cindy) Lucek all of Baudette; Mother-in-Law LaVonne Baade; Sister-in-Law Deb (Tim) Bey and Brother-in-Laws Jason Baade, Lance Russell, Maverick (Christie) Russell. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and a huge community of friends! He was preceded in death by both his parents; his Daughter Narra-Lyn Lee in 2003; his father-in-law Ken Baade, Mother-in-Law Betty Neilson; brother Rudy Lucek CHS 1964 in 2010, and Nephew Brandon "Fritzy" Dahlgren in 2015. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2019 from 1-4 p.m. at the Moose Lodge in Baudette. In Lieu of flowers donations can be directed to Dorothy Lucek to help cover medical expenses. Interment will be held at Elm Park Cemetery at a later date.

Robert ( Bob) L, Johnson, 87, of Naperville, Illinois formerly of Rogers, Arkansas and Springfield, Illinois entered eternal life on March 25, 2019 with his 

wife , Anita at his side. He was born November 22, 1931 to Oscar and Ione Mellish Johnson in Thayer, Illinois. Bob married Shirley Grogan in September 1955 and they later divorced in 1983. Together they had a daughter, Kathleen. He was a devoted father to Kathleen (Rick) Wanless of Springfield, Illinois. He was a loving grandfather to Ashley Wanless (Todd Weill) , Ericka (Jose') Salas, and Kelsie Wanless ( deceased) ; and a loving great- grandfather to Audriana Salas and Torrey Weill. A sister, Lois Surlak, lives in New Auburn, Wisconsin. He married Anita Gillett Thorndyke on May 19, 1984. He was a loving step-father to Peggy Thorndyke Jupe (Andy Novey) of Boca Raton, Florida; Jean Thorndyke (Steve) Hannah of Joliet, Illinois, and Mark Thorndyke (Sue) of Barrington, Illinois. He loved his step-grandchildren; Matthew, Taylor, Jack, and Morgan Thorndyke; Carly (Brett) Moyer; Caleb and Kyle Hannah; and adored his great - grandson Liam Moyer. Bob served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War on the Battleship USS Iowa. Upon his return he was employed with Illinois Bell Telephone and retired from AT&T after a long and successful career. He was a lifetime member of Sertoma International and the American Legion. He volunteered as the director of Habitat for Humanity as well as the Beaver Lake Fire Department in Rogers, Arkansas. He was instrumental in bringing Via de Cristo to the Arkansas/Oklahoma Synod. Bob had been a member of Peace Lutheran and Living Word Lutheran Church in Rogers. Arkansas. He was a current member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Naperville, Illinois. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Ione Johnson, his brother Arthur Johnson, and his granddaughter Kelsie Wanless. Interment will be held at the Abraham Lincoln Military Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois on May 13, 2019 at 11:30 A.M. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chatsworth where she was very active. Virginia also served on the Charlotte Township Board and as an Election Judge for many years. Above all, Virginia enjoyed being with her children and grandchildren. They were her hobbies, and she loved spending time with them whenever she could. She was a loving mom, grandma, sister, aunt, and friend who will be greatly missed.

Phyllis was born on February 24, 1933 in rural Piper City, IL the daughter of Howard and Lillian (Drilling) Pearson. She married Gene Corban on March 23, 1952 in Chatsworth. He passed away August 15, 2012. Her parents also preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons: Larry (Joy) Corban of Streator, IL; and James (Debra) Corban of Greeley, CO; four grandchildren, six great grandchildren; her brother: Glenn (Zoe) Pearson of Lafayette, IN; and one sister: Marilyn Fortna of Fairbury. Phyllis was a member of Chatsworth United Methodist Church. She worked at The Citizen’s Bank of Chatsworth as a teller for most of her life. She enjoyed arts & crafts, collectibles, and spending time with her family.

Debra was born August 2, 1955 in Bloomington; the daughter of Glenn and Sheralyn (Shoemaker) McKinley . She married Robert W. Underwood on May 31, 2008. Her husband Bobby survives in Chenoa. Her parents, one brother, Mark McKinley  and one son Kyle Kimmel preceded her in death. Also surviving are one son, Travis (Erin) Weller of Columbus, OH; Daughter Kari (Jon) Bettisch of Downs; step-children, Danielle (Ryan) Donovan of Fairbury; Dustin (Whitney) Underwood of Bloomington; Derek Underwood of Fairbury; sister, Kathy (Ted) Lacina of Bartlett; brother, Kevin (Michelle) McKinley of Normal; and seven grandchildren Debra graduated from Chatsworth HS in 1973 and worked for Caterpillar Inc. for over 35 years. She attended Christ Community Church in Chenoa and volunteered at Hope Pregnancy Center in Pontiac. Debra was a passionate, unselfish woman who loved to serve others. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home. Ruth was born August 1, 1927 in Champaign County the daughter of William and Blanche Withrow McClain. She married Edward Hilligoss in June 1947. He preceded her in death August 1979. She later married Lester Puffer October 31, 1992 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Loda. He preceded her in death May 23, 2003. She is survived by her son, John P. Hilligoss of Apache Junction, AZ; one step son, Michael Puffer of Kankakee; one step daughter, Sharon Berns of Clifton; three grandchildren, one great grandson, one great granddaughter, five step grandchildren, and six step great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and five sisters. Ruth grew up on a farm west of Paxton. She attended grade school at the Amity Country School and graduated from Paxton High School in 1945. She worked for seven years for General Telephone Company, Paxton and retired from Ameritech Telephone Company in Chicago. After retiring in May 1984, she moved from Chicago to Bayles Lake, Loda. She then lived in Cape Canaveral, Florida for 10 years before moving to Arizona in 2014. Ruth was a past president of American Legion Auxiliary, past treasurer of Bayles Lake Association, and a past member of the Bayles Lake Auxiliary, Telephone Company PIONEERS, and Lakeview Country Club. While living in Florida she was a past president of Cape Shores, Cape Canaveral. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo and crocheting. Joyce Deany, 83, of Watseka passed away on March 14, 2019 at Prairieview Lutheran Home in Danforth. Joyce was born February 13, 1936 in Clinton, IA, the daughter of Leonard J. and Kathryn (Flessner) Hoeger and they preceded her in death along with one sister, Carol Bowen. She married Paul Dean Sloter in Chatsworth in December of 1958 and he preceded her in death in 1961. She later married Donald Deany in Cullom on August 10, 1963 and he survives in Watseka. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Eric Paul Sloter of Bella Vista, AR, John David Sloter of Boone, IA, and Mark Donald Deany of Richmond Height, MO; thirteen grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; and five brother-in-laws. Mrs. Deany was a music educator and a school counselor for Crescent Iroquois and Watseka Unit #9. She was a member of Iroquois Mental Health Center, Lutherans for Life, Retired Teachers Association, and Past-President of her church council. Visitation will be from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2019 at Knapp Funeral Home in Watseka. Carol grew up a farm girl who was a bookkeeper most of her life. She enjoyed her faith, family, friends, a good laugh and her dogs. She liked to collect antique glassware, garden, read and be with family and friends. She was proud of her Ostfriesland German heritage and enjoyed genealogy with her family. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the McLean County Nursing Home for taking care of her. Their care and love will be missed. Memorials can be made to The Baby Fold, Normal, IL or Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bloomington, IL.

Obit of David L. Hendershott

 ELGIN - David L. Hendershott, age 66, died Friday, January 20, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 26, 1950 in Peoria Il, the oldest of ten children. After serving in the US Navy, he met his wife, Rebecca. David worked as an RN, and settled in the Elgin area to raise their family. He fought the good fight against cancer, but the battle was too great and the Good Lord called him home. He leaves behind his wife of 28 years Rebecca. His children, Colin and his wife Lyndley; Rachel and her husband, Nolan and three grandsons, Lukas, Kaleb, and Mikah; Molly and her fiance Griffin; Thomas, Joshua, Carlos, Rob, Max and Lucy. He will also be missed by his sisters and brothers, innumerable nieces, nephews, a vast extended family, and a great faith community. David will be reunited with his mom, dad, brother and sister in heaven. Visitation will be held Monday from 4 to 8:00 P.M. at Yurs Funeral Home St. Charles. Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church 2900 E. Main Street St. Charles. Burial will be at River Valley Memorial Gardens West Dundee. Contributions may be made to the family. Please join graduates of Chatsworth High School and their guests on Saturday June 29th at the annual
alumni meeting. This year’s honor classes are those ending in (9). Our social hour begins at 3:00
p.m. and will be followed by a short meeting with recognition of the honor classes at 4:00 p.m.

Dues are Due!

The annual dues are $10.00. We would appreciate your yearly dues being remitted to the
Alumni Association even if you are unable to attend. The dues play an important part in keeping
