MELVIN – Wayne Russel Bertram, age 80, of Melvin died at 6:55 a.m. Sunday (Dec. 15, 2013) at Heartland Health Care in Paxton.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Roberts, the Rev. Priscilla Geerdes officiating. Full military rites will be conducted by the Wagner Davis American Legion.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. before the service on Wednesday at the church.
Wayne was born March 18, 1933, in Roberts, a son to William and Florence E. (Underwood) Bertram. He married Barbara Warder on July 27, 1953, in Hoopeston. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Lorie (Patrick) Enriquez of New Mexico and Catherine (Wayne) Hunter of Roberts; a son, Richard (Becky) of Smithfield, Va.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Howard (Olive) Bertram of Gibson City and Edwin (Elsie) Bertram of Roberts; and three sisters, Dolores Kenney of Normal, Beverly Rueck of Roberts and Judy (Steve) Tolbert of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William Jr. and Robert; and a grandson, Kurt Kurtz.
Wayne retired from the U.S. Navy after serving 28 years. He served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.
Wayne helped a few farmers after his retirement. Wayne restored and showed hit-and-miss engines. He was a member of the I&I Engine Club. His most recent hobby was toy trains.
Memorials may be made to the Gibson Area Hospital or a charity of the donor's choice.
Lamb Funeral Home in Gibson City is in charge of the arrangements.
