Bob was born on June 25, 1937 in Chicago to the late Lela Kuhring. He married Barbara Lambert on December 20, 1958 and she preceded him in death on January 11, 2009. He is survived by their two daughters, Celeste Hoerner and husband Dean of Pontiac, IL and Jean Butler and husband Brent of Charleston; five grandchildren, Amber (Doug) Carls of Flanagan, IL, Brandon (Jessica) Hoerner of Bloomington, IL, Eric Hoerner of Pontiac, Brandi (Jeff) Garlich of Nashville, IL, Jacob Butler of Charleston; four great-grandchildren, Dylan and Delaney Carls, Mason Hoerner and Mason Garlich; three sisters, Ruby (Richard) Weston and Brenda (Larry) Hemp all of Piper City, Ellen (Tom) Rafferty of Texas; a brother, Kendall McCoy of Utah; and several nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to his father and mother, Herschel “Hut” and Lela McCoy, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ron and Wayne McCoy.
Bob was a graduate of Piper City High School where he played high school football. Following graduation he honorably served his country with the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. Bob enjoyed reminiscing about his days in the military as a paratrooper, being stationed in Germany and times shared with his Army buddies – some with whom he still kept in touch.
He was employed with Nichols-Homeshield in Chatsworth before accepting a position with Celotex (Dow Chemical) in Charleston where he worked from 1978 until his retirement in 2004.
Bob loved being outdoors, especially on his Cumberland County property where he could enjoy his favorite hobbies of hunting and fishing. It was also a place where you could always find horses, a variety of hunting dogs and an occasional pet raccoon. He was a semi-pro Bassmaster Fisherman and his daughters can recall many fishing outings on the water with dad.
He enjoyed league bowling, the horse races at the Greenup Fairgrounds and playing poker with family members and friends. Bob was also quite the handyman and could repair almost anything. Even though he often seemed to be a man of few words he possessed the art of storytelling. Some of his favorite times were sitting around with his family, whom he dearly loved, sharing stories of special times. Many of the words he spoke were often words of wisdom from a man who experienced much and from one who would rather be self-sufficient rather than ask for help. His family and his many friends will truly miss his presence in their lives but his memory will forever be treasured through the many stories and good times shared.
Bob’s memorial website is available at www.adamsfuneralchapel.com where condolences may be sent to the family by clicking on obituaries. To leave condolences online, visit www-jg-tc.com, click on obituaries, select the individual's name and click on "Comments" to log in.
